How to Prepare Your Home for Hurricane Season

If you’re a homeowner who lives in a state adjacent to the Atlantic or Gulf Coast, you probably hold your breath each year between June 1 and November 30, hoping your house doesn’t end up in the path of a hurricane — or even a tropical storm, which can have sustained winds up to 74 mph.

You also hope The Weather Channel’s Jim Cantore doesn’t show up in your town, because that means you’ve gotta get the heck out of Dodge — if it’s not already too late!

But thankfully, unlike earthquakes and tsunamis, you always have at least a few days’ notice to prepare for a major storm. And if you’re a hurricane pro, you know not to wait until the last minute to do so. Otherwise, you’ll end up staring at empty water shelves, and all the good beer and snacks will have already been snatched up by your neighbors.

However, way before that — preferably before or at the start of hurricane season — there are few things you should be taking care of around the exterior of your house, which can help keep bad situations from turning into worse situations.
