One Contractor Answers a Community Post
For months, a Gulf Coast homeowner had been stuck on long waiting lists for grant help while her roof leaked. Crews had patched it for her over the years, but every repair eventually gave way. Water kept finding its way back in, staining ceilings and wearing the rooms below.
She didn’t know that her home was about to get the fix it needed, or better yet, that it would start with a stranger scrolling past a community social media post. That stranger was Jose Alonso, owner of Strong Roofing in Gulfport, Mississippi. When someone posted in a local community group asking for help on behalf of their family member, the photos stopped him.
Jose commented on the post and invited the family to message him. The next day, he was at the home.
Meeting the Need
What he found was worse than the photos suggested. Inside, the homeowner had tarps set up to catch the rain, cut through with holes so water would drain instead of pooling. She even joked that her dishes got rinsed twice whenever she washed them.
That day, Jose covered as much of the roof as he safely could with synthetic underlayment to slow the leaks. But the deck had so many weak spots that walking the whole roof wasn't safe, and a patch wasn't going to fix it.
Once the old shingles came off, the extent of the damage was clear. The decking was deteriorated, and rot had spread through the rafters. The roof replacement had become a full rebuild.
Making it Happen
Jose reached out to his Atlas representative, Rene Marks, and he said, "Absolutely. We’d love to help." Atlas Roofing Corporation donated Weathered Wood ProLam® shingles and Jose donated the labor and the accessories.
Along the way, the homeowner kept asking Jose the same question: Why was he doing this? She was in tears, unable to believe a stranger would go this far to help her.
A Home Made Whole Again
The crew recently wrapped the install, and the family's reaction said it all. "We got it all wrapped up and it came out awesome," Jose said. "They were ecstatic and at a loss for words." Looking back, Jose kept it simple. "I’m glad I could be a part of this to help this family," he said.
She’d spent months waiting for help. Now the leaks and rot were gone, and the house finally felt like home again.
This project is a reminder of what contractors can do when they pair their trade with compassion. One comment on a community post turned into a dry, sound roof for a family who needed it.
