Atlas Roofing California Title 24 Cool Roofing Shingles

Beautiful roofing that meets California's energy code & then some

CRRC Rated Product Title 24 Certified California Eligible LA Code Ready

California requires a cool roof on most re-roofing and new construction projects across its hottest climate zones. Pinnacle® Sun and StormMaster® Shake (Moonlight Beach) are built to meet that standard with room to spare and available in colors that look nothing like what you'd expect from a compliant shingle.

Your California Roof Just Got a Legal Upgrade.

Homes in California need to comply with some very specific cool roof requirements, and as a homeowner, you shouldn't have to choose between what the code requires and the color you want. Pinnacle® Sun shingles are rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council, engineered with 3M™ Cooling Technology, and are available in six colors that bring warmth, depth, and coastal character to any California roofline.

Why Atlas for California

AESTHETICS

RICH COLOR THAT REFLECTS MORE THAN IT ABSORBS.

3M™ cooling granules reflect near-infrared solar energy, the invisible heat that makes up roughly half of the sun's total output, without affecting the rich, deep color of the shingle. Warm tones. Coastal tones. Earthy tones. All Title 24 compliant.

TITLE 24 CERTIFIED

INDEPENDENTLY VERIFIED, NOT JUST SELF-REPORTED.

Every Pinnacle® Sun color and StormMaster® Shake - Moonlight Beach - shingles carry an official CRRC, the independent certification California building departments and utility rebate programs require. It's on the label of every bundle at your job site.

ENERGY SAVINGS

YOUR ATTIC STAYS COOLER, THE AC WORKS LESS, & YOUR BILLS REFLECT IT.

A conventional dark shingle can reach surface temperatures above 150°F on a California summer afternoon. Pinnacle® Sun shingles help keep attics up to 20°F cooler, reducing the load on your air conditioning and lowering cooling costs by an estimated 7 to 15%.

ALGAE PROTECTION

PERFORMANCE THAT HOLDS UP LONG AFTER INSTALLATION DAY.

3M™ Scotchgard™ Protector uses time-released copper technology to prevent blue-green algae growth on the granule surface, protecting both the appearance and the reflective performance of your roof for the long term, and your warranty covers it.

If You're Re-Roofing in California, Here's What the State Requires

California's Title 24 energy standard exists because roofs in the state's hottest regions absorb an enormous amount of solar heat. In regulated climate zones, a CRRC-rated cool roof isn't optional for most projects. The requirement kicks in when you replace more than 50% of your roof area, or more than 2,000 square feet, whichever threshold comes first.

Does this apply to your project?

If your home is in Climate Zones 4 or 8 through 15, covering the Central Valley, Inland Empire, Sacramento area, and most of Southern California, the statewide requirement applies.

If you're in the City of Los Angeles or unincorporated LA County, a stricter local standard applies. Three Pinnacle® Sun colors clear that higher bar.

Not sure which zone you're in? The California Energy Commission's Climate Zone Lookup Tool will tell you in about thirty seconds.

What is an SRI Value?

Solar Reflectance Index, or SRI, is the score that determines whether a shingle passes California's test. It measures how hot a roofing material gets under direct sun, combining how much light it reflects with how efficiently it sheds absorbed heat.

California requires a minimum aged SRI of 16, meaning the rating is tested after three years of real-world weathering, not fresh off the production line. That's the number that counts for legal compliance, and it's independently verified by the Cool Roof Rating Council .

The Science Behind the Shade

3M™ SCOTCHGARD™ PROTECTOR

Algae growth quietly degrades a cool roof's reflective performance over time by darkening the granule surface. 3M™ Scotchgard™ Protector stops it at the source, using time-released copper technology to preserve both the shingle's appearance and its CRRC-certified SRI value for the life of the roof.

SEE THE DIFFERENCE

Six Colors, All Title 24 Compliant

Choosing a new roof is one of the most visible decisions you'll make for your home. The good news is you don't have to compromise to get it right. Every Pinnacle® Sun color meets California's statewide Title 24 requirements straight out of the box, and if you're in Los Angeles or LA County, you have options too.

Pinnacle® Sun shingles are built with HP42® Technology, delivering a clean, dimensional look with fewer seams across your roofline. Every color comes backed by a 130 mph wind warranty, Class A fire rating, and lifetime algae protection with 3M™ Scotchgard™ Protector.

Moonlight Beach: Cool Roof Compliance Meets Class 4 Protection

StormMaster® Shake Moonlight Beach was built for California homeowners who refuse to choose between a roof that meets the code and one that can take a beating. Title 24 cool roof compliance and Class 4 impact resistance, the highest hail rating available and the #1-ranked designation from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety, in a single shingle.

StormMaster® Shake Moonlight Beach is engineered for California's most demanding conditions, built with Core4® Technology, a 150 mph wind rating, and Class 4 impact resistance, the highest hail rating available. Every shingle includes 3M™ Scotchgard™ Protector for lifetime algae resistance and 3M™ Smog-Reducing Granules for neighborhood air quality benefits.

Moonlight Beach meets California's statewide Title 24 requirement. For projects in the City of Los Angeles or LA County requiring the stricter local standard, see Pinnacle® Sun Cool Sand, Cool Moonlight Beach, or Cool Surf.

Questions Homeowners Ask About California Title 24

If you’re replacing more than 50% of your roof area, or more than 2,000 square feet, in Climate Zones 4 or 8 through 15, yes. Your contractor can confirm based on your zip code and project scope.

Not with the right technology. 3M™ cooling granules reflect near-infrared radiation, the invisible heat in sunlight, without affecting visible color. Deep tones, warm tones, and coastal tones are all available. The curb appeal your home has now isn’t something you have to trade away.

California sets a statewide minimum SRI for regulated climate zones. The City of Los Angeles and unincorporated LA County require a higher standard. If you’re in either jurisdiction, Pinnacle® Sun Cool Sand, Cool Moonlight Beach, and Cool Surf are the colors built for your project. Your contractor can confirm the exact requirement for your address.

A single score, from 0 to 100, measuring how hot a shingle gets in full sun. It combines reflectance and heat release into one number. Standard dark shingles score in the low single digits. Pinnacle® Sun shingles range from 18 to 21. California requires a minimum of 16.

Potentially yes. LADWP, PG&E, SCE, and SMUD all offer rebates for qualifying cool roof installations, and Atlas products meet the documentation requirements of those programs. Ask your contractor about what’s available in your area when you get your estimate.

Research from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is clear: in California’s climate, the winter impact of a reflective roof is negligible compared to summer savings. Shorter days, lower sun angles, and heavier cloud cover mean far less solar energy reaches your roof in winter to begin with. The annual energy equation consistently favors the cool roof.

Title 24 also provides exemption pathways. R-38 or higher ceiling insulation, a radiant barrier, no HVAC ducts in unconditioned attic space, or continuous above-deck insulation can all qualify a project for an exemption from the prescriptive cool roof requirement. A contractor can walk through your home’s existing setup and tell you where you stand.

Yes, especially in California’s climate zones. Keeping your attic up to 20°F cooler on peak summer days means less demand on your air conditioning during the hours when electricity costs the most. Homeowners in regulated zones typically see cooling cost reductions of 7 to 15%. In areas with time-of-use utility rates, the savings on peak-hour consumption are the most immediate to feel.
