Spring has sprung… Flowers are in full bloom and the sun is extending its warm hello for a little longer each day. But with each warm day, there's always the likeliness of a storm to steal the show. Enter: hailstorm season. Hailstorms are most prevalent from April to October throughout a large region of the U.S.
Hail can fall from altitudes of up to 60,000 feet at speeds up to 120 miles per hour. Though pellets range in diameter from a half centimeter to more than five inches, damage normally takes place when hail size reaches 1.75 inches (golf ball-sized) or larger.
As a homeowner, hailstorms can be a scary thing. The roof is your home’s first line of defense against these costly natural disasters. Once the roofing system fails, it exposes other parts of your home to damage, which can lead to a breakdown of your home.
To protect your home, it’s critical that you have routine roof inspections, quickly repair any damages, and replace your roof altogether when necessary. In hail-prone areas, it's best to use impact resistant roof covers to reduce damages and cost-related losses. Asphalt roof shingles are a lightweight, low cost and easy-to-install roof material that some roofing manufacturers make available with UL 2218 Class 3 and 4 impact resistance.
Roof coverings that have passed the UL Standard 2218 test are classified as either Class 1, 2, 3, or 4. Many insurance companies offer a discount when roof coverings have passed the approved test. A Class 4 roof covering receives the highest premium credit.
Atlas Roofing offers two full lines of Class 4 impact resistant shingles—StormMaster® Shake and StormMaster® Slate—both designed with SBS (Styrene Butadiene Styrene) Technology to combine high performance with lasting durability. Don't let hail test your roofing system; instead make your roof shingles fight back.
