If you’re familiar with Atlas polyiso roof insulation products, then you’ve likely seen the image below. So what exactly does that certification mean? Well, let us tell you.

Pima

The Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association (PIMA) developed the QualityMark certification program to allow participating polyiso manufacturers to voluntarily certify the Long Term Thermal Resistance (LTTR) values of their polyiso roof insulation products through an independent, third-party. The program is administered by FM Global. Polyiso is the only insulation to be certified by this unique program for its LTTR value.

The program was designed to be a benchmark for all roof insulations and gives specifiers, project teams, contractors and other users an easy way to identify quality products that meet or exceed listed LTTR values. For over a decade, LTTR values for roof insulation under the QualityMark certification program have been reported and certified according to the testing requirements of ASTM C1289 "Standard Specification for Faced Rigid Cellular Polyisocyanurate Thermal Insulation Board.”

Polyiso is unique in that the R-value increases with the thickness of the foam. For example, see PIMA’s chart below:

Thickness LTTR Value/Inch LTTR Value
4 5.9 23.6
3 5.8 17.4
2 5.7 11.4

In order for a manufacturer to participate in the certification program, a Class 1 roof is suggested to have a design R-value of 5.7 per inch. Therefore, FM Approvals has approved the use of Atlas ACFoam® as a component in Class 1 insulated roof deck construction. This QualityMark certification provides consumers an easy way to identify quality products that meet or exceed listed LTTR-values.

Considering consensus standards in the United States and Canada, LTTR is a scientifically supported way to calculate the 15-year, time-weighted average R-value of roof insulation. Since polyiso insulation has the greatest energy efficiency performance or R-value of any building insulation product on the market, it’s the product of choice for the best overall insulation for roof systems. Higher R-value per inch means less polyiso material is required resulting in greater energy efficiency, reduced energy waste, and lowered costs for both materials and labor.

So the next time you see the PIMA QualityMark symbol on Atlas polyiso insulation, you can be assured that product will meet or exceed necessary LTTR-values.
